The word "bonding" is everywhere now. On the shelf, in the captions, in half the decks in the industry. It sounds scientific and protective and worth paying for, and yet almost none of the products using it will tell you what a bond actually is.
So here it is, without the noise.
Hair holds its structure through a few different kinds of bonds. The ones that matter during lightening are the disulfide bonds, the strong permanent ones that give hair its resilience. Oxidation is what lifts your color, but it stresses those bonds at the same time. Do that enough times without any support and you get the breakage, porosity, and loss of elasticity every stylist recognizes on sight.
Here's the part the word tends to hide. Some formulas just condition the surface, so the hair feels better the moment you rinse. Others are built to support the structure underneath. It's the same word doing very different work.
